Opinion: STEVEN TYLER Is 'Terrible Choice' For 'Idol'
August 20, 2010According to The Pulse of Radio, entertainment industry web site The Wrap published an article on Thursday (August 19) making the case that AEROSMITH frontman Steven Tyler would be a "terrible choice" for a new judge on "American Idol". Writer Dominic Patten says in the piece that Tyler, who's rumored to be taking the gig, is "too damn old" and "too damn dull," adding that the 62-year-old singer "can be saucy and sassy, but . . . left to his extended own devices — as too many interviewers and musicians have discovered — the hyperactive singer can ramble in a way that makes Paula Abdul look positively poetic."
Patten quotes one "industry observer" as calling Tyler a "relic" and saying that "all he brings to the show is a scarf and giant lips."
The piece concludes with Patten writing that Tyler is "probably looking for a change" after 40 years with AEROSMITH, but says, "If you think 'American Idol' was the best exit ramp for Tyler, for the show and for us . . . well, let me quote a great American poet: 'Dream on.'"
Although no official announcement has been made, AEROSMITH bassist Tom Hamilton told New Jersey's Star-Ledger that the "ink is dry" on Tyler's contract to appear on "American Idol".
